About Julie Cunningham

Julie Cunningham, founder of Julie Cunningham Nutrition and author of 30 Days to Tame Type 2 Diabetes, has been a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist for over two decades.

After graduating from Appalachian State University and the University of NC at Chapel Hill, she got her first “real” job as a nutrition director for a tiny health department in Alexander County, NC.

After that, she worked with a wonderful team of certified nurse midwives in a high-risk prenatal clinic for several years.

Next, she moved to Hendersonville, NC, where she took a job as a cardiac rehab dietitian and outpatient diabetes educator. And that’s where she discovered how much she liked working with people living with diabetes. She went on establish a private practice and to write for national media outlets, including Taste of Home, Abbott Nutrition, Edgepark Medical, Eat This Not That!, Babylist, and diaTribe.

She also published a book called 30 Days to Tame Type 2 Diabetes.

When not talking or writing about food and health, Julie likes reading thriller novels (but not the hard-core gory ones, thanks). And when not reading, she enjoys traveling, eating in good restaurants, taking yoga classes, and lying around in her backyard hammock. She speaks broken Spanish and absolutely none of the French she learned in high school.

Julie lives in western North Carolina with her family and several four-legged friends.

What People Say…

“After spending years caring for my husband and my dog, who both had diabetes, I felt comfortable. But when my doctor said, You have diabetes, I lost my nerve and my knowledge. With Julie’s help, I cut my A1c in half and lost 35 pounds within six months. Now, I have the confidence, the knowledge, and the drive to keep on this path. It’s a continuous learning experience and I know I can make this journey with Julie by my side.”

Living with Type 2 Diabetes

As soon as I met Julie, I knew she had a gift of truly listening to where someone is. It was so much more than just about food. We started digging into the emotional reasons that I was reaching for the food – like for comfort or pain. Realizing that I truly wasn’t hungry at times but instead wanted to stuff my feelings about things going on in my life. Each visit has been so eye-opening and her gentle and very human approach is so healing.”

Julie Cunningham is AMAZING! I am newly diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic and felt lost. Not having a nutritionist for the first 8 months, I researched as much as I could online to see what I’m supposed to do/not do and what to eat and when. It was a struggle! Once I found Julie, it was so easy!  I could contact Julie any time that I had a question. Her background and knowledge of diabetes is PHENOMENAL!”
